John Wherry, Ph.D.

E. John Wherry, Ph.D., is the director of the Institute for Immunology and professor in the Department of Microbiology at the University of Pennsylvania. His laboratory focuses on understanding immune system differentiation and dysfunction, including the study of immune exhaustion during chronic infections and cancer. The goal of these studies is to enhance therapeutic interventions and preventive strategies that overcome, avoid or reverse T cell exhaustion. John received his doctorate degree in immunology from Thomas Jefferson University and did postdoctoral training at Emory University.
